You need a Ford OBD Code reader; after 1996 all vehicles use the same system for code management (OBD-II), but prior to ’96 each manufacturer had a proprietary system (in your case all Ford’s from this era used EEC-IV engine management computers). There is usually a way to check the codes w/ a volt meter as well, google is your friend in this regard or possible a Chilton or Haynes manual. Good luck.
