I have a 1990 Probe GT. It has an intermittent check enqine light. All of the engine code readers that I have seen do not go back far enough for my vehicle. I also found a manual procedure on the internet but I couldn’t get that to work either.

Any suggestions on how I can determine what the check engine code is?

    Thanks

You need a Ford OBD Code reader; after 1996 all vehicles use the same system for code management (OBD-II), but prior to ’96 each manufacturer had a proprietary system (in your case all Ford’s from this era used EEC-IV engine management computers). There is usually a way to check the codes w/ a volt meter as well, google is your friend in this regard or possible a Chilton or Haynes manual. Good luck.

Thank you very much ! With the keywords from your response, I was able to locate a reader on amazon.ca.

That’s great, hopefully it’ll help you pinpoint the issue, good luck!

For others, the OBD-I that I ordered from amazon did NOT work for my 1990 Probe GT. The meter would work for a 2.0L or 3.0L, but NOT the 2.2L turbo.

I was able to get my codes by using this procedure:
